Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder based on the word association when she was a toddler. Ford was fascinated by acting during her teenage years and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she was a poor fit there. Ford made an application for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured an interview on her fourth attempt. One of her classmates included Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was not able to complete her degree in 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her debut on television in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. In addition to her regular theatre work, Tate joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was recognized for her stand-up comedy that was added to her resume in 1996.
